On Eras of Writing
Reading any book written after 1960 is more like watching a movie than reading literature. Reading any book after 1990 is more like watching TV than reading literature. But this is to be expected…how can the massive influence of seeing a story play out on a screen not totally change the course of written fiction?
This is why I prefer the classics. If you’re going to read a book, read a book. If you’re going to watch TV or a movie…then do that.
Sure, there’s a time for recent fiction…but it’s more life distracting than life-enriching.
